What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy as a profession focuses on helping people do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities or occupations. Occupational therapists provide client-centered, neurodiversity-affirming services, including the family and client as an integral part of the treatment team. The main goal of OT is to help participants gain the confidence and abilities necessary to function and engage in their daily life outside of the context of therapy sessions.

OT is an evidence-based practice that is deeply rooted in science. Occupational therapists receive training in the areas of psychology, neuroscience, group dynamics, anatomy and kinesiology, task analysis, and human growth and development. In addition, occupational therapists participate in over 700 hours of supervised fieldwork before graduation, when they are eligible to take a national registration examination.
